5-Day
Ethical Mentawai Tribe Immersion on Siberut Island
Three full days living with a Mentawai family
in the rainforest, guided with respect by local people.
This is a slower and deeper way to meet the Mentawai people. Over five days, you spend three full days in the jungle with your host family. You share their home and their meals, take part in their daily work, and meet a Sikerei (a Mentawai shaman). The journey is run with care for the community, and the tribe is not asked to perform for visitors. It is a few days of real life with a real family.

What makes this journey different
- Three full days with the tribe. You have time to settle in, build trust, and see daily life as it really is, instead of a short visit.
- Meet a Mentawai shaman (Sikerei) and
learn about his traditions, spiritual practices, and deep connection to the
jungle.
- Live with a Mentawai family. Share
their home, their meals and their daily routine.
- Take part, not just watch. Work
alongside your hosts, learn survival skills and gather food.
- Trek and paddle into the rainforest of Siberut, crossing rivers by traditional canoe.
- Run with respect. Our
guides come from the Mentawai Islands, and the community is part of every
decision.
Your
journey, day by day
Day 1: Padang to the Mentawai tribe
Your adventure starts early
with a hotel pick-up in Padang at 06:00. At 07:00, you board the fast ferry
from Muara Port, Padang, to Siberut Island. On the way, we stop for one hour in
Pokkai, in the north of the island. We then have a traditional lunch at a local
restaurant before continuing.
When we reach South Siberut, we travel from the port to a nearby transit village. There we board a traditional motorised canoe and travel along the river through lush jungle. At the trekking point, we walk through the rainforest to the Mentawai clan house. Expect some swampy, muddy ground on the way. At the end of the trek, you meet the Mentawai shaman and his family, and begin to see their traditions and way of life up close. ( Accomodation: Mentawai traditional house, Meals: L, D)
Days 2 to
4: Three full days living with the tribe
These three days are the
heart of the journey. You live as part of the tribe family in the middle of the
jungle, and follow the rhythm of their day. You do not only watch. You take
part in everyday activities, such as:
- Cutting sago trees and processing them
into food
- Fishing with traditional methods
- Preparing poison for hunting
- Learning hunting and survival skills in
the jungle
- Scouting the forest and setting traps
- Gathering food from the forest
- Hunting (If available during our stay)
Good to know: There is no fixed schedule. Each day follows the Mentawai people's own rhythm. If we are fortunate, we may be able to witness a traditional ceremony during your stay. This hands-on time gives you real insight into the resilience and knowledge of the Mentawai people, and a clear understanding of their ancestral way of life. ( Accomodation: Mentawai traditional house, Meals: B, L, D)
Day 5:
Farewell and return to Padang
Start the day with breakfast
and a farewell to your host family. We trek back to the riverbank, where a
motor canoe takes us to the transit village near Siberut port. There, you can
freshen up and organise your belongings at a local Mentawai house.
We then transfer to the
ferry port and have lunch at a local restaurant. The fast ferry leaves Siberut
at 14:40, and you arrive in Padang at about 18:30. We transfer you to the hotel
or hostel of your choice, and the tour ends.
( Accomodation: None, Meals: B, L)
Important
notes
- River levels. The canoe cannot
always be used, especially in the dry season when the river is too
shallow. When this happens, we continue on foot through the rainforest to
reach your host family.
- Flexible plans. We may change, delay
or adjust the programme to suit the weather and natural conditions and to
keep everyone safe. Our guides make these decisions using their local
knowledge.
- A different kind of trip. This
journey will take you beyond your comfort zone. It is flexible by design,
which allows deeper time with local life and culture.
Price
From €270 per person. Small-group rates are available.

What to
expect
- Basic living. You live in the same
conditions as the Mentawai community. You sleep on a floor mat under a
mosquito net, and there is no toilet.
- Simple conditions. The
families who welcome you do so with great generosity, in an isolated place
with limited resources. Comfort and cleanliness may not meet Western
standards.
- Demanding terrain.
Expect mud, slippery and uneven ground, and walking across logs that the
Mentawai use as bridges.
- Hot, humid weather.
Temperatures on Siberut range from 31°C to 33°C. The driest months are May
to early September, although it can still rain. The wettest months are
November to January, with frequent and heavy rain.
- No electricity. Charge your phone and
camera before you leave, and bring spare batteries.
The right
mindset
This journey can be demanding, both physically
and mentally. We ask every guest to bring:
- Mental resilience. A
willingness to accept discomfort as part of the experience.
- Adaptability. The ability to adjust
to unfamiliar surroundings and changing plans.
- Cultural awareness. A
basic understanding of Mentawai culture and jungle life before you travel.
Your guide gives you a full briefing before the trip begins.
Come prepared and open-minded, and you will
get the most from this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Travelling
respectfully
- Be ready for a rustic stay. Many Mentawai communities live without
the comforts common in Western lifestyles.
- Give yourself time to connect with your hosts.
- Be yourself. Show real interest and learn from their way of life.
- Be present. Your hosts want you to enjoy your time with them and
welcome their hospitality.
- Leave expensive items at home, such as watches, necklaces,
bracelets and earrings. They can attract attention and lead to requests
for gifts, which may create uncomfortable situations and affect your
relationship with the community.
- Always ask permission before taking photographs.
Our ethical
guidelines
This trip is about mutual respect, learning
and cultural exchange. Please approach it with humility, curiosity and an open
heart.
- Do not assume your hosts understand or relate to your lifestyle.
- Do not impose your comforts or habits on them.
- Do not try to bring them into outside society. Respect their
customs, and avoid influencing them with outside ideas or conveniences.
- Do not judge. Every tribe has its own traditions and beliefs. Be a
respectful observer and welcome the differences.
