Practical Information and Terms
Living Conditions and Expectations
- You will live in the same conditions as the local Mentawai community in a remote village. Accommodation is extremely basic: a floor mat and a mosquito net. There are no modern comforts; this is an authentic jungle experience.
- Because of the isolation and limited resources, comfort and cleanliness may not meet typical Western standards, and there is no toilet. The families who welcome us do so with great generosity.
- Approach the experience with an open mind and a spirit of adaptability; this lets you fully enter the Mentawai way of life.
- Mentawai communities live in remote jungle areas, so access is challenging. The trek crosses muddy, slippery,y and uneven ground, and sometimes logs the Mentawai use as makeshift bridges.
Important Considerations
- Weather: On Siberut Island, nd temperatures range between 31 and 33 °C. Be prepared for hot, humid, and unpredictable weather.
- No electricity: There is no electricity in the Mentawai jungle. Charge your camera and phone beforehand and bring extra batteries.
- Physical and mental preparedness: This journey can be physically and mentally demanding. Participants need strong mental resilience, high adaptability, and a good understanding of Mentawai culture and jungle life. Your guide gives a briefing before the trip begins.
During Your Immersion Stay
- Be mentally prepared for a rustic experience; many tribes lack the basic comforts of Western life.
- Allow time to connect with the community.
- Be authentic: show genuine interest, engage, and learn from their way of life.
- Stay present: your hosts expect you to enjoy your time with them.
- Avoid expensive items such as watches, necklaces, bracelets,s or earrings. They can attract attention and lead to requests for gifts, which may affect your relationship with the community.
- Always ask permission before taking photos.
Guidelines for a Respectful Experience
- Do not assume the tribes understand or relate to your lifestyle.
- Do not impose your comforts or habits on them.
- Do not try to integrate them into outside society; respect their customs and avoid influencing them with outside ideologies or conveniences.
- Do not be judgmental. Every tribe has its own traditions and beliefs. Be a respectful observer; this experience is about mutual respect, learning and cultural exchange, approached with humility, curiosity and an open heart.
